Well boil is nearly over. Had to get a brew on today! I haven't brewed in ages and my stocks are looking dangerously low! Gonna have to get a couple more on sharpish.

I names this one Ulysees 31 after my favourite TV cartoon when I was a kid. INTRO MUSIC HERE. I figure he travels through the galaxies........it's a brew with galaxy! Makes sense to me! :D

Just uploading some pics to photobucket now so will post the ASAP! :D

Nice one LB, looks like a good 'un to me! Lovely colour, is that the caramunich then? I think you've probably gone for a much more sensible amount of Galaxy than my first attempt (110g in the boil and 40g dry IIRC) which is a bit over the top I think - I'm starting to like it now but it's got a touch of the sour sweets to it which should mellow to lovely by the time I finish the barrel off, as usual

Lovely day to be brewing outside anyway!

Looks like a nice brew. What are Galaxy hops like? I remember Ulysses 31. Back in the days when cartoons were real cartoons* and they always had an annoying sidekick.

* Actually looking back, they were considerably crappier than the ones made today, but you have to have your rose-tinted specs on for anything that was on TV more than 20 years ago. We bought the original Spiderman cartoons on DVD and the animation is just appalling. I'm going to stop ranting now :)

Ditto. What's the crack with Galaxy. High AA but used for aroma.....? Isn 't that against the rule of thumb. What flavour do they give.

Pineapple and grapefruit flavour, LILTS the taste you really want to savour, LILT with the totally tropical taste. :)

Nice smooth brew day. Used WLP090 slurry from my black ipa. Figured it'd be ok as there is no roast in it! :D

Cheers chaps

Aye Lugsy, been waiting for a nice day. I can put up with cold, it's the constant wet I'm getting sick of! I'm hoping that the by using the galaxy from 10 mins on it'll have a nice smooth, mellow bitterness, along with the magnum.

I've never used them matey but I'm hoping for the tropical fruit hit that barney was talking about.

GP. With alot of the new world, high alpha hops they also have a very high oil content. It's this that helps give this type of hop it's great aroma profile. A good example of this is simcoe. Apparently (I heard this from listening to the brewing network) It was developed by Yakima chief as a high alpha for the likes of anheuser-busch et al to make extract for macro beers. It was taken up by the craft brewing scene over there as it also has excellent aroma qualities.

Other high alphas that are apparently good for aroma include apollo, summit (which I have used in a black ipa late and it is good!), and even CTZ.

I'm going to be experimenting with more of these super alphas late in the noil very soon.

cheers

Oh yeah, forgott to mention. I managed 21L at 1.053. It will be fermenting at about 17-18oC and will get the dry hops in once primary has settled down. Mash efficiency was 88.5%. If it ferments down to the predicted 1.012 it'll end up at 5.4%abv.

Nice :D
