AG#60 Titan Imperial Stout (NYD+1) parti-gyle brew

Post by leedsbrew » Mon Jan 02, 2012 12:10 pm

This is my New Years Day Imperial stout......................only I didn't get it brewed yesterday! er...............

In my defence I was f%^&ing knackered after the worst NYE night shift in A&E. I slept from 9 yesterday till 4 the was back in bed from 10PM. I had managed to get the grains weighed out and water treatment, recipe printed, iPhone synced with BeerAlchemy etc. So today is official brewday. To be honest it's quite apt as this idea started on 02/01/2010 with my 1st RIS to be saved for the next NYE. Some members may have seen THIS THREAD

After talking with pdtnc this year this idea has snow balled into the behemoth that it has become SEE THIS THREAD

I'll hopefully be doing a parti-gyle brew day so long as things go acording to plan. The second gyle will probably just get one kettle addition of challenger or centennial and then a good helping of cold extracted coffee in the secondary!

So with no further jibber jabber from me I'm brewing

Good one LB! At least you've got a good excuse to have missed the brewday, mine was down to being an idiot

It's a beautiful day here, hopefully it's coming your way so you can boil outside - I've got condensation pouring down my windows at the moment! I know what you mean about the amber malt, this is the first time I've used it and it smelled so good I wish I'd put more in.

Cheers Lugsy! Yeah it's starting to brighten up so fingers crossed! I've got about 3kg to use up as it's getting on a bit now so I'm gonna start making up some more recipes with lots in! Maybe a stout with equal roasted barley and amber? Big coffee hit! Oh hang on....that'll be this then! lol

Well all in all it hasn't gone too badly today! :D

I think the mash efficiency was down as I did 2 no sparge beers from the one mash, but it shouldnt be that far off. I'll be boiling the 2nd gyle tomorrow as I'm running out of time tonight before we have friends round for dinner.

More pics and stats to follow! :D

I was generally all sticky after my brewday thanks to the thick wort!
Looks good, and I'll be interested to try that second beer too :) I'll add a link on my blog post to this thread.

when you say slurry from the last brew how do you go about gathering that from the bottom of the fermenter?

Just a big sterilised metal spoon mate. Out of the bottom of one FV into the other! :D

For about a week should be a 'safe' bet, longer in a sealed bottle with beer on top (like splitting a whitelabs yeast) I guess.
