New Zealand Red Ale

Post by floydmeddler » Wed May 30, 2012 7:43 am

Hey folks,

Inspired by this, http://www.beerchampions.com/Beer-Detai ... _id=188413, I decided I'd take a complete New Zealand twist on the hops and brewed me a New Zealand Red Ale. I LOVE red hoppy beers. This one is for my wedding day. It smelled unbelievable last night...

New Zealand Red Ale

Original Gravity: 1.051 (1.026 - 1.120)
Terminal Gravity: 1.010 (0.995 - 1.035)
Color: 33.9 (1.0 - 50.0)
Alcohol: 5.39% (2.5% - 14.5%)
Bitterness: 44.8 (0.0 - 100.0)

Ingredients:
4.9 kg Maris Otter Pale Ale Malt
540 g CaraMalt
130 g Carafa Special® TYPE III
23.0 g Pacific Jade (15.1%) - added during boil, boiled 90 m
8.0 g Nelson Sauvin (12.6%) - added during boil, boiled 90 m
77.0 g Pacific Jade (15.1%) - steeped after boil
92.0 g Nelson Sauvin (12.6%) - steeped after boil

Let's hope it tastes as good as it smells!!

pdtnc, orange and black pepper apparently! http://nickrace.net/2010/03/hops-pacific-jade/ Have used them before but overpowered them with American hops. I've probably overpowered them here too with NS!

Skittlebrau, Cheers. Sorry, no pics. I'm brewing 4 for the wedding and this is number 2. I brewed on Monday after work (heavily hopped IPA) and yesterday after work. Really feeling it today...

I used a big hop bag for the steeping addition and really squeezed and wrung out the hops after the steep. Reckon this released some serious concentrated hoppiness.

I got my hops from Rob (Maltmiller) and man, they were super sticky. Just went back into the room and the hop smell is getting stronger in there... and the window is open!

I'm sat here drinking your beer Floyd.

Well very near your beer, Pacific Gem in place of the Jade, I think Jade is Gem's daughter ;) .
Same ABV and everything.
I can guarantee this will be a hit at the wedding.

Hey congrats, looks like you have a good day planned

Excellent! Red hop monsters are the shizzle. Should be a good day. My missus had better watch out now that Jade is on the scene...

Looks like a goodun! I've a couple more US brews I want to attack but I'm certainly going to get some NZ hops in the not too distant future.

@Floyd - re: honey - none available at moment but I've asked him to make sure to pot some in a couple of small pots next time he's doing whatever it is beekeepers do.

Just sampled this. Massive pine on the nose. Tasted damn good. Pine flavour with a very gentle back roast from the Cara III. Obviously a lot more flavour to develop as it's only been 2 weeks. I'm hoping for a hop explosion to develop between now and then. :-)

OK... supping a pint as I type. absolutely delicious. Glad to report that the pine flavour isn't as sharp - more rounded if that makes sense. I'm hoping it's not at its peak as the wedding isn't for another month!!

This has spent 5 weeks in primary. Minikegged it today.
