Cheapskate win!

Post by vacant » Tue Sep 22, 2015 4:31 pm

I bought a £36 RO water filter and let it run for a day for a brew last Saturday. I wondered how much head of water (pressure) I would need to run my immersion chiller if I used the waste water I had stored. The answer was "more than a bucket on a step ladder on a patio table"! But pushing water through with a 10 ltr garden sprayer got the air lock out, then once the hose and chiller were filled with water it was enough height to keep a flow going.

So my RO waste water -> cooling wort -> warm water for cleaning kit. Cheapskate win!

To be honest, the flow rate is slow - took around 35 minutes rather than 20 to cool a 20 ltr brew but I'll probably live with that.

Result! :)

It's surprising that it took so much pressure to get a flow going though!

I've just tested a £5.99 submersible aquarium pump. The bucket of cooling water can now sit next to the boiler.
