Relaxed Double Brew Day

Post by Alton_Bee » Sat Sep 15, 2007 2:06 pm

Was only going to ONE Brew today but could not decide what to brew. Mentioned this to the SWMBO and she said if I had all the things to do 2 both - why not do both ?

GREEN LIGHT :D

As do not have other plans for today I am now doing TWO brews today with no time constrants - so therefore will be quite realxed about the time this takes.

The first brew is strongly based on Nethergate Old Growler from BYOBRAAH:

Maris Otter Pale Malt: 4,500 gms
Crystal Malt: 450 gms
Torrified Wheat: 200 gms
Black Patent Malt: 85 gms

I upped the TW as that finished up what I had in my jar.

Following on from recent posts am going to try the late addition of all hops on this brew with roughly 30 mins left as follows:

Challenger: 60 gms AAU 8%
Fuggles: 30 gms AAU 4.5%

The secong brew will be a Northern Brown type Ale:

Maris Otter Pale Malt: 5,000 gms
Special B Malt: 257 gms
Crystal Malt: 233 gms

Again with both the Special B and Crystal this quantity used up what was in the jars.

Hop wise I am as yet undecided but am likely to go with Fuggles with possibly some Styrian Goldings (AAU 3.8%)

Currently (2.10pm) the sparge water is heating for the 1st brew with the grains weighed out for the 2nd.
Once the boilis underway for the 1st I will start heating the mash water for the 2nd.

Have a good one Vic, it's good to see a fellow brewer who doesn't feel the need to be up at the crack of dawn. My mash water is on and I'll be doughing in shortly too - enjoy.

1st brew is now boiling - will be adding the hops as specified above in a little bit.

Mash water for 2nd nearly up to temp.

Once I have mashed in the 2nd brew the hops will go into the 1st and then 15 - 20 mins later in will go the protofloc.

Certainly did enjoy the double brewday.

Ended up turning off the boiler on the 2nd brew just after 6 - so only took an extra 90 mins max to make an extra 23 litres. !!!
