JBK Brewalong 28-29 May - Summer Quaffer
All finished today as off for the tomorrow for some non-brewing related weekend (v poor planning!!!).
Brewed to the recipe apart from reduction of 90 min hops (higher AA on my pellets) and ended up using MM NBS West Coast Ale yeast as it was all I had in...not sure whether the standard NBS yeast would have been better suited...we'll see in 6 weeks time.
23l in the FV at 1046. Tasted great. Lovely golden colour. Made up for discovering last night that the PB tap on my last brew had split and flooded the cellar...not a happy camper!
Here's mid mash...
Hope everyone else's goes well!

5 Pressure Barrels next to my brewing gear like that would distract me a little

Hmmm...had a brew day a few weeks back that got a bit out of hand when I lost count of the tasters....need to get a smaller brew day glass!

I have exactly the same scales Jim. There are forces at work out there that we will never understand.

Flawless brewday! Only slight fault was that I was dialing in my final volume in Beersmith on my last brew and forgot to save my profile so ended up with 23L when I was aiming for 21.5L but can't argue with more beer!
23L
1.044 OG
I've got 15g of EKG left over so will use that to dry hop.
Mash water coming up to temp.
Mashed in.
All wrapped up!
Boil start.
90 min hops in.
IC in and steep hops added @ 80c.
All cleaned up.
23L fermenting away nicely with Wilko Notty.

We aren't the only ones, either - I noticed an identical pair on one of Vandeen's pictures the other day.Clibit wrote:I have exactly the same scales Jim. There are forces at work out there that we will never understand.

Couple more pics from my premature brew day.
Yeast has gone off like the clappers. 12 hours in and it was up to 22 deg, when the fermentation fridge was only at 16!
Recirculating mash for first time with one of those little solar pumps - worked well!
Sparge
Boil

Looking good so far
I'm just sitting here working out some final figures for tomorrow's Brewday and is a starting Alkalinity of 20ppm CaC03 in the right ballpark?
Cheers

Re: JBK Brewalong 28-29 May - Summer Quaffer
My day yesterday didnt go at all well.
First I didnt have the right hops (couldnt find them in the freezer anyway) so had to improvise a bit and then after mashing in I realised I had used Pale WHEAT malt instead of Pale Malt. I didnt check because I never buy wheat malt and this was my last 5kg bag. I only noticed because the BM 'dried up' and started making funny noises so I investigated and then saw the label. The supplier must have sent me it by mistake.
So I had to throw that away, clean up and start again but I only had 2kg of MO so I had to improvise again and add in some wheat malt!, some crystal, some caramalt and some munich type 3 to get it up to a decent gravity worthy of the effort. I then added some hops to offset the likely sweet outcome.
Once I got going again it all went ok although I managed to forget the copper finings so its looking pretty murky and during the run off into the FV a bleeding fly got into it and is still in it.
Here's some pictures...
First mash..
Throwing away the first mash...
Revised grain bill...
Progress
nearing end of the second mash
Crazy boil..
Pitching the yeast (I like the Mangrove yeast)
I only managed about 18 litres all in but OG was 1048
Bastard fly...
In brew fridge at 19c
I tasted the wort which was really, really bitter so I may have over-hopped it a bit too much, we'll see.
