Anyone having a brewday today?
Been wanting to brew a RIS and today's the day. Just running off the mash now and looking forward to seeing what I got as preboil gravity, expecting 1.074 With an OG of 1.104 . Let you know what it tastes like in a year's time. Probably before .

Re: Anyone having a brewday today?
I'm doing my JBK brew along tomorrow.
The kids turned up yesterday with the grandkids and don't go back until tomorrow
So when the peace and quiet return the mash wil go on!

Re: Anyone having a brewday today?
Had to get mine done last Thursday, but reading this thread is making me wish I'd saved it
Have already got the next recipe ready...so just ticking off the days until the fermentation fridge is freed up!

I pitched the yeast into my JBK Summer Quaffer about 30 mins ago.
All went quite well, just got to finish cleaning up.
Cheers

Re: Anyone having a brewday today?
Can't do any brewing- run out of temperature controlled chambers! So did the only sensible thing and won an Ebay auction for a very cheap and very local counter-top freezer to make another chamber. So I'll have my main Fermentation chamber in the shed, the lagering freezer in the "shed extension" and then a reasonably large conditioning chamber in the loft at 12 degrees. Should do the trick. I cunningly made the shed chamber out of a single 2400*1200 celotex and I'm struggling to remember how. Annoyingly I threw away the plans....
But once I've made the new chamber I'll get on with my barley wine....

I brewed a Pale Ale this morning, 25 liters, OG 1.049 all Maris otter, 60 grams of Challanger at 60 minutes and 50 grams of Fuggle at 10 minutes .
I buy my grain & hops from here http://www.homebrewkent.co.uk/

Edit: Only managed to get 1.090. The lower alcohol doesn't bother me but the reason why BS2 suggested 1.104 and I missed so badly does. Will be investigating this today, anyone like to chip in with lines of investigation?

Did you hit your pre-boil gravity? And was your efficiency as expected?

Incidentally I have a couple of RIS recipes, both with OG of 1.104 in Beersmith. The Pre-boil gravity is 1.084 for a 90 minute boil on one, and 1.088 for a 2 hour boil ( Courage RIS) on the other.

Re: Anyone having a brewday today?
The predicted preboil was 1.073, I got 1.070 on a 90 minute mash with 77.6% efficiency, which on a big beer I was pretty chuffed with, usually around 83% on a standard beer. The boil was 70 minutes using a BS2 suggestion, I wonder now if 90 might have got closer, no doubt it would, but I'm very sceptical it would boil down to 1.104 even from 1.073. Having not done one before I don't know what to expect, but from your recipe it looks like the preboil gravity would have had to be much higher anyway. The mash profile wass single infusion, medium body, no mash out.Goulders wrote:Incidentally I have a couple of RIS recipes, both with OG of 1.104 in Beersmith.
