AG Double Brew Day

Post by james1988 » Sat Apr 15, 2017 10:41 am

Morning All,

Yesterday I carried out a double brew day and made one IPA followed by a rather pale ale. The day was long and wasn't helped by the fact that I couldn't get beer number two out of the boiler; the hop filter packed up. I had built my boiler several years back on a budget using two Argos Value kettle elements, a plastic tap and a short length of copper pipe while it has done it's duty I now feel it is time for the old beast to be retired and a new boiler built - I'm thinking something by Brewbuilder. So, after the boil the wife and I - much to her behest - poured the wort out of the boiler through a sieve and a colander to try and remove as much of the crap as possible; it sort of worked.

Brew number one was as follows:
For 19l at 1062
4.6kg of Pale Malt
0.5kg of Caramalt
0.175kg of Crystal 120
0.170kg of Flaked Barley

70g of Fuggles for 60 minutes
20g of Bramling Cross for 20 minutes

Yeast WLP004
Expected Final Gravity is 1016

I hit 18.5L at around 1060 so mostly on the nose but room for improvement. Pictures below:

Beer number consisted of...
3.1Kg of Pale Malt
0.3kg of Crystal
0.2kg of Flaked Barley

20g of Admiral at 60 minutes
30g of Pilgrim at 20 minutes
15g of Admiral at 15 minutes
30g of Pilgrim at 15 minutes

Yeast was Danstar Nottingham
Expected final gravity is 1.006

I was aiming for 21l at 1040 but have about 25l at 1034, room for improvement needed but I think some of that 25l is the crap from the boiler.

The day was finished off with a stout that I made around 6 months back that I'd written off at the time which turned out to be superb!
