American wheat beer

Post by Tomp » Sun Jul 16, 2017 7:26 am

A nice relaxed brew day today. Tour de France on later, dog to walk and that's about it.

Water treatment in a while but starting the day off correctly:

Lots of kit, too many ingredients and not enough time, but a patient wife.... who loves my beer...........

Could be worse :-)

I'm aiming for a wheat beer with loads of orange flavour.

Medium strength (about 4% ABV) and very pale, with lots of suspended yeast.

I'm making 40 litres, just in case.

Camden tablets added (half in each bucket)

Water tested. I live in a very hard water area so 40ml of AMS added

Water now ready (40 litres just in case)

Few chores to do before I start so water can sit and rest for a while.

Mash went well. A stepped mash, stopping as 45 c for a while then up to 65 then mash out.

Forgot to check the mash Ph so we'll never know Image Image

Then a fly sparge.

If I've one critique about the bulldog brewing system, it's the pump. When doing brews such as this, where there is a lot of small particles coming through (wheat malt) the pump does tend to clog. But I can live with it for the price and it only takes a few minutes to clean out.

Took a while for the yeast to get going - I direct pitched rather than a starter but it's now cementing nicely and the FV is sitting at a lovely 23 c.

Thanks.

Looking for a more permanent home in the house for the brew kit at the moment. Next project on the DIY list.
