A nice extract result

Post by burrito » Mon Jun 02, 2014 8:46 pm

I have tried several extract brews to date, some from Brew UK, and some recipes from a BYORAAH Wheeler/Protz book I bought in 1994. Although they have been better than kits, they haven't had any wow factor.

Had a search round and came up with this, a definite improvement.
I was going to call it Buggles Beer but the name seems to be taken. Perhaps Boggles/Boggled?

Equipment
Image
27L Baby Burco from ebay
33L SS pot with tap from the Malt Miller
Propane burner
IC
Fridge with STC1000

3000g Pale DME
180g Crysal Malt

55g Fuggles 5.6%AA
40g Bobek 3.98%AA

Safale04 yeast.

Steeped Crystal for 30m at 68C in my Baby Burco (F33L) filled nearly to brim.
Ran this weak wort into boiler.
Added DME.
Brought to boil and added Fuggles.
After 75 mins, immersed the chiller and then added 20g of Bobek.
Boiled for a further 15 mins.
At flameout, added the remaining 20g of Bobek.
Chilled to 25C, ran into FV via a sieve and pitched yeast.
Fermented for 2 weeks at 20C, then bottled on 18th May.
Conditioned at 20C for 1 week.

The result is an Amber Ale with subtle aroma clove/orange. A spicy taste with a very bitter finish. Reminds me a bit of Leffe.

Next time I will try a bit less bittering hops and will try adding the second lot of Bobek after cooling to 80C instead of immediately at flameout.

Anyway, here's a picture of the result.

Drinking 1 - Barrelled Progress/Fuggles/EKG extract brew.
Drinking 2 - Bottled Fuggles/Bobek amber ale.
Conditioning - A summer beer, Fuggles/EKG/Bobek.
Fermenting - A single hop brew using Delta.
