Confession Time :) Kit Brew :)

Post by barneey » Wed May 15, 2013 3:58 pm

Today I brewed my first lager kit for more than 20 years (Harvest), I got a couple from Tesco`s the other week when they were selling them off cheap as my stocks of witbeir were running low and having sold near enough everything except a 70ltr pot and a brew fridge I thought I would at least try a kit again :)

Normally my brew days are an all day event but glad to say from start to finish it took 30mins :) couldnt be bothered too much about quants so mixed the two kits with 2kg of brewing sugar a 1/2 bag of DME I had laying around, 2x safale s04 yeasts (didnt like the look of the kit ones) fill ed the 70lt upto 1/2 way full with water pitched the rehydrated yeast, lid on (no airlock) set the fridge temp and finished. Cant even be bothered with taking a gravity reading :)

No idea what this is going to taste like is the Harvest kit any good? or should I have done things differently? or not even bothered ? its a far cry from a normal brewday albeit very stress free and quick.

:D

Maybe all the All Grain snobs should do this at least once as I suspect some of us (yes I count myself among them  ) haven't tasted a kit beer in years and don't know how good/bad they really are. Keep us posted on the results, would have liked to have seen the brewday pics :D

There wasnt time to get the camera out although a nice shiny tin of extract could have made a nice piccy.

So the morning after pics instead, the slightly damged 70lt pot (no handles - long story), not even the probe in the ferment just stuck to the outside :)

The rather lonely looking pot

And Mr Whippy

i was quite lucky that UKTony wanted the white fridge as I wouldnt have got this far. :)

No idea, prehaps the yeastys like it better at the back, that or something isnt quite level somewhere?

I`ll just have to tilt the glass when drinking :)

I was looking at the piece of wood under the FV, is there another piece I can't see or is it really on the wonk for some technical reason unknown to me?

All I`m glad is that I`m brewing in a 70ltr pot, should be no climbing out the pot :) I`ll check how Mr Whippy is getting on later :)

If you google "mr whippy krausen" there are afew other examples about, as to cause I`ve no idea? No airlock = no pressure?
