Irish Moss in a nylon hop sack

Post by barry44 » Sat May 25, 2013 9:12 am

Hi guys,

i have done a few partial mash brews using a nylon hop sack to boil my hops within my pot.

I usually add irish moss at 15 minutes to go into the bag along with the hops.

However, some beers recently have been quite cloudy, although they have been dry hopped.

My question is, does irish moss work in the sack or does it need to be in the boil running free, as it were!!

I don't think that it'd work too well in a sack...

that's pretty much what i am thinking myself.

i assume it needs to circulate within the wort to do it's job.

The last beer that I dry hoped took a long time to clear. Does dry hopping tend to cloud beer I wonder?

Not really. Highly hopped beers will get a natural haze from the compounds in the hops, but I believe you need to boil to get these out.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
