Freezing and Boiling LME ?

Post by aamcle » Wed Nov 20, 2013 5:55 pm

I have a couple of cans of cheep kits, I was planning to split them down to say 200g portions and freeze them.

I was hoping to use them as hoped LME to boost the gravity of my AG batches if (OK when) they come out a bit low.

My cunning plan falls to bits if they won't freeze, so what is your experience , will LME freeze and store?

Many Thanks. Aamcle

Ps. Can bitterness be reduced by boiling Hoped LME?

I use LME for most of my starters. Just a jar from Holland & Barrett.

Freezing sounds like a bit of a palaver.
After 1st use, why not pour what you don't need into cleaned sanitised container(s).

For containers you could use a sanitised 1L plastic milk bottle, or jam jars.
If in a bottle you can just pour off what you need each time.
There is so much sugar in them its very unlikely to go off.
Mine never has I just keep it in a cool dark place.

BTW: Boiling won't reduce bitterness of hopped LME.

what do you mean? freeze solid?

at -20 there is going to be zero cellular activity, ie, bacteria is not going to do anything at all.
regardless if it is frozen solid at -20 it still is at -20 !
