Solid extract

Just discovered my Dried Malt extract that I use for yeast starters has gone and set itself as a solid block in the bag.

Can I just break off lumps and dissolve them in water, or should I bin this and buy another bag?

Can't see why not, you are going to boil it anyway so contamination isn't an issue, but it will be more difficult to know exactly how much DME there is as it has already absorbed moisture. As a check you could check the gravity of it once made up to make sure it isn't over 1.040, initial yeast starters (slants etc) are probably best circa 1.035 to 38.
