Beer colour

Post by Orwell » Sat Aug 20, 2016 8:59 pm

I have done 2 extract brews and both turned out darker than I expected.
Both times I used 1.5kg of light DME each time
I boiled it in 6l of water, which I now know is too little

I now have bought a 19l pot and my aim is to have 14l in the FV
To keep it lighter in colour can I use .5kg of DME from the 60 min boil and then add the final 1kg in the lst 15 mins.?

Yes, leave extract as late as you can to avoid darkening.

Also try extra light extract!
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Thanks for that

I didn't know there was an extra light DMe
My LHBS only ever had the light version, He has not had any of it for the last 2 weeks (makes it hard to support the shop)
I managed to get 3 lots from fleabay

I will try using .5kg then add the 1kg at the last 15 mins and see how that works out
