Which brand of LME

Post by Sadfield » Thu Sep 15, 2016 2:59 pm

Going to do my first Extract brew (went straight to AG) for a local homebrew club competition. What is everyone's preference for Brand? We're doing APAs so it'll be light.

Thanks.

I'm more for DME myself.

That's always an option. Have read that there is a marginal benefit to quality if LME is fresh, so wondered if there was a consensus of any brand being better. Will probably end up using DME anyway.

I've not used it but the Maltmiller LME looks worth a go.

I've just done a couple of brews with HBC's LME, too early to tell how good as one is conditioining and the other is still fermenting. It was a bit more liquid than the usual Coopers LME I use and I had to brew a litre or two short to get the desired OG, but for a fiver a tin (half the price of Coopers) I thought I'd give it a go

Whichever brand lme you get make sure it's fresh.

Good point, but how do you tell, especially when buying mail-order?

Thanks all, I suspect freshness is more important than brand. Wonder if Coopers and Breiss suffer in the UK through the added transport time to market.

As it transpires I didn't actually enter this comp as I got sidetracked brewing an AG imperial Stout, but plan to brew a small batch of APA using DME, tomorrow.

If you buy local you can see the 'best by' date. If you buy mail order you have to trust the seller to not send his old stock.
