Partial Mash OG - Calculator Error?

Post by EggFart » Thu Sep 22, 2016 2:12 pm

Hi

I am new to home-brewing and this is my first post, so please go easy on me!

I have just done my first partial mash brew and needed about 49 gravity points from my DME.  Unfortunately I overshot my OG by quite a bit (it was 1.066 instead of 1.057)

I used an online calculator (Brewersfriend) to calculate the amount of DME.  Using the metric calculation, 3kg of DME in 23 litres shows an OG of 1.049 (so I used 3kg).  After much head-scratching as to why my OG was high, I checked the imperial calculation which shows 6.6lb of DME in 5 gallons giving an OG of 1.059 - I would have expected the OG to be virtually the same in both cases and think this variance is why I overshot

I think the B/F tools are excellent, but I want to try and make sure I’m using the right amount of extract.  As I have seen quite different values for DME (light) can someone please advise which of the above calculations is correct so I can adjust my weights accordingly

Many thanks

Richard
