I am newbie to this home brew thing and I have just started my third kit.
I bought the book "Home Brew Beer" and have been very tempted to try one of the recipes using BIAB.
It looks deceptively easy!
Now I would like to avoid any significant expense and keep things as simple as possible.
I was thinking of boiling a smaller quantity of wort, the book says that this can be done with 10 litres with 1kg of DME, then add the remaining DME 10 minutes before the end of the boil.
As I understand it, this will be a slight compromise with regard to releasing the bitterness of the hops. Will this be very noticeable? Could I use a more bitter hop variety to compensate?
The hop types I can find also have slightly different A/A%. So do I need to make sure that they have higher values than in the recipe?
Also, how much difference does the yeast make? The recipe states Wyeast 3522 but I can't find any for sale.
This is the recipe:
500g Caramunich I Malt
3kg of light DME
Hops: 38g Golding 5.5%, 51g Saaz 4.2%
Yeast: Wyeast 3522 Belgian Ardennes
Any advice gratefully received!
Newbie considering a BIAB- some questions
Re: Newbie considering a BIAB- some questions
Being a complete noob to this I'm afraid I can't answer your questions, but do you by chance post on STW under the same user name?

Yes.
Do you?
Have we "discussed" stuff?
Your not Junkyard are you.......

Re: Newbie considering a BIAB- some questions
Hi,
This isn't BIAB as such but extract so you may have more luck in the specific area.
BIAB is mashing, removing the grains and boiling in a single vessel.
