How Much Water

I have looked at many recipes including the ones on here trying to decide what I will brew for my first all grain brew. I may have just mist something but the recipes don't tell you how much water to use.

Download the excel file from here, I use this to put together all my recipes. Plenty of other useful info on there too :)

If you have a 50l pot, and want 23l of beer in the bucket, start with 34l.

About 4 or 5 litres gets soaked up in the grains; some more gets boiled off; and about 2 litres is at the bottom of the crud in the pot.

Download brewing software - essential ! Based on how much beer you want out it will work out grains, hop quantities, water quantities and ABv's for you - and allow you to play with and fine tune your beer before even touching your kit...

I'm Brewmate user (nice and freeeee :D) but other software is available. Its easy to use, intuitive and did I mention, free ?

Grain quantities do make a difference to how much wort you'll get. more grain equals more wort soaked into grain.
