Best no chill cubes and size

Post by sbond10 » Wed May 20, 2015 11:23 pm

Just wondering where people bought there no chill cubes and any that I should avoid guessing it's got to be hdpe plastic. Are the coloured one s ok ? What about head space does it need to be to the brim. Do you vent as they cool.

Cheers sean

I got one of these:

All I do is fill with hot wort (transfer with a pipe to avoid hot side aeration), screw lid on loosely then squeeze gently to get any air out (be careful it gets hot), screw on cap so its tight. Then lay on its side so all surfaces get covered and leave to cool. You'll find the hot wort will suck the contaners sides in, don't worry about this. Here's mine filled:

I think I have the exact same cubes. I can't fill them any more than you have done in the pic.

Still works fine

Why do you lay it on its side surely wort goes into the handle then it be hard to keep sanitary. So 25 litres is about right for a 23 litre brew. Anyone use 30 litre ones?

That one looks like the handle may be isolated from the main body (guessing from the end near the screwcap). However, the rationale is that the high temperature wort scalds all the surfaces it touches, leaving them sterile.

You need the wort to pasteurise all the surfaces. Best achieved by tipping. It is impractical to squeeze out all the headspace in a cube like the one above

yeah, you get plenty more than the specified volume. 23L goes nice into the 20L version..

See I have a 23 litre fv s so if I manage to get 29 litres into one then I have a problem.

Also how hot to pasteurise I've heard leaving the wort for 20 minutes (especially if using 0 minute hops) helps trub and proteins to settle so probs won't be 100 degrees still very hot tho.

Also what hose should I use pvc reinforced or silicone hose. My exit spout is 15mm

silicone, definitely. personally i start transfer almost immediately after flameout but i'm super paranoid if i'm not fermenting the very next day. still fairly new to nochill though (~7 brews) so still got plenty of experimenting to do myself..

Pasteurization only needs a temperature of around 80 degrees, perhaps even lower. I think milk is pasteurized at around 75 degrees C.

Apprently at boiling wort temp it takes 0.01 second to pasturize or upto 30 mins at lower temps I think

as a side note, as the cube is a lovely sanitised container i now ferment the wort in it, so i always underfill them to make sure there's headspace for the krausen. so using a 25L cube for a 23L brew. but minimal hassle is very important to my brewing.. :p
