So 1g:4g sulphate to chloride addition give 1321ppm of calcium (60ppm per litre for 22 litres) and the other additions chloride and sulphate, are they negligible?

No, no, no. You want to add 1ppm of sulphate to every 4ppm of chloride , not of the compounds.

Now that would upset the Americans. :D It's a ratio.

Glad I didn't go to B&Q to buy a shovel. So how do I go about adding the required amounts, in even easier layman's terms please?

I have bought the Ashbeck water and put the mineral values into the Liquor Treatment Calculator by Graham Wheeler.

Calcium 10
Magnesium 2.5
Sodium 9
Sulphate 10
Chloride 12
Carbonate auto-calculated at 12.29 based on Bicarbonate 25

I have set the Sulphate: Chloride Ration to 1:4

I have calculated using the Lager option for Target Liquor and get Salt Additions recommended at:

Calcium Sulphate 64.7 mg/l
Calcium Chloride 91.48 mg/l

Assuming I have done this correctly where does the 1:4 ratio fall in? if I remove it from the calculator and set it to 0:0 is still get the 64.7 and 91.48 values.

Aleman I would appreciate any guidance you can give me on this thanks.

If you are using 1:4 I think you need to set the target profile to custom

Thanks Goulders.

I have set to Custom, ratio 1:4 and the warning asks for the Mg/Na balance, final result still gives me:

Calcium Sulphate 64.7 mg/l
Calcium Chloride 91.48 mg/l

Have you put a volume in?

Yes 32 litres so final additions for volume are:

Calcium Sulphate 2.07 grams
Calcium Chloride 2.93 grams

Yeah, I've put the figures for Ashbeck into my spreadsheet and I get completely different values.

Calcium 60 Volume 22L

Code: Select all

Sulphate to chloride 1:4 Gives calcium sulphate 0.50g Calcium chloride 3.60g
Sulphate to chloride 1:3 Gives calcium sulphate 0.75g Calcium chloride 3.44g
Sulphate to chloride 1:2 Gives calcium sulphate 1.15g Calcium chloride 3.05g
Sulphate to chloride 1:1 Gives calcium sulphate 2.00g Calcium chloride 2.30g
Sulphate to chloride 2:1 Gives calcium sulphate 3.00g Calcium chloride 1.45g
Sulphate to chloride 3:1 Gives calcium sulphate 3.55g Calcium chloride 0.96g
Sulphate to chloride 5:1 Gives calcium sulphate 3.93g Calcium chloride 0.68g
Of course that level of precision is not really critical

Copy of results attached. I input the data from the top down using everything I could see on the label. Did I miss anything or is it as you say not that critical?

Ok I took what you did and used Automatic as the water type rather than lager and got this (which agrees with my workings for a 1:4 sulphate to chloride ratio :D

Graham's Lager profile goes for a 1:1 sulphate to chloride ratio ;)

Thanks Aleman.

when I do it again I get the following value automatically in the line to note 5

50 2.5 9 15 19.4 77.6

whereas you get

60 2.5 9 12.3 23.8 95.2

is this just an anomaly with computer internet software? or something else?

This then impacts on the values generated for the next three lines and the final ratio on a 22 litre volume of .37grams Sulphate and 2.91 grams Chloride.

I guess the bottom line is they are both close to each other in terms of grams addition to Ashbeck water for a lager brew, would you agree?

I changed the desired calcium to 60 myself ;)

Either would work and work reasonably well. What I'm noticing is that I want a little more dryness in my pilsner so I am actually thinking of going down to 1:2 for the next batch.

There is no right or wrong, just I like that beer . . . But I like this beer more. Someone else may think the opposite . . . Doesn't make either one of you wrong
