How many brewers sanitise their mash tun and boiler? Obviously they and the bag need to be clean, but before the boil there is no need to sanitise.

Its a personal choice and one that I am happy to make as I have never had a bad batch of beer and believe that this is in part because I adopt a strict regime for cleaning and sanitation at every stage. :D

Forgot to mention: this is a biab question so mash tun and boiler are the same beast.

My pot and bag are very clean before the mash but not sterile.

As mentioned, its unnecessary to sterilize the grain bag before the mash, though it won't actually hurt anything. However, just to mention in case its not obvious: if you find yourself also wanting to sterilize the grain (e.g. in order to preserve the sterility of the bag) then that would be highly detrimental. The mash is not and should not be made sterile, irrespective of what you did to the bag.

This is really the key point. You cannot sterlize what's in the bag prior to the boil. But if you could, the most effective way to do so would be by boiling it anyway.

And you're going to do that. You're definitely going to be boiling your wort and everything in it for an hour or more.

You're not skipping sterlization, this is where it happens.

By all means, clean the bag before mashing in it. Get rid of any detritus, and give it a soak if you want. But don't worry about sterlizing it before the boil, the boil does that and more.

Clean well pre boil and post boil apply additional sanitation.

storing equipment dry and open to the air is way more important than applying redundant sanitation steps.
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store

I give it a good rinse in the sink to get rid of any grains then it goes for a spin in the washing machine (sans washing powder)

I have just bought a Peco electrim 32Ltr plastic boiler with digital thermostat.
Which is the best bags to buy for these please? And what else do I need to buy? I already have all my beer kit brewing gear. Do I need a wort cooler? And if so where's the best place to get one, hopefully not too expensive? Plus, any recommended idiot proof recipes for a first time brew?

Thank you.

I also have a peco and use the Mashing and Sparging bag from Ritchies. Most lhbs will stock them.

Google the 'no chill' method.

A recipe is a recipe - BIAB or otherwise. Have a search on here for Seymour's Citra Gold or Jim's Summer Quaffer.

But you cannot use the mash and sparge volumes from a recipe if you are BIABing. I use the BIABacus spreadsheet from biabrewer.info to convert any recipe to my set up.

+1 for Biabacus. Really accurate in its calculations.
