Should I stir

Post by sbond10 » Fri Jun 10, 2016 8:19 am

I brew in a 100 litre pot for 23 litre batches. Using around 40 litres of water. I normally pour the grains in and stir for a good couple of minutes then seal the pan up for 90 mins. Then unwrap and stir again then lift and squeeze and disgard the grains.

I'm just wondering if I should be stirring half way thru the 90 min mash. Since moving to bairds I've noticed a slight drop in efficency I was wondering if this would help

Hi, so your doing biab? This is perfectly fine to do.

what I do when Biab'ing is give the mash a good stir every 20 or 30 minutes, depending on mash duration and then squeeze at the end. I biab on a electric system so when I am stirring the mash I flick on the element to maintain the correct mash temp

40 litres for a 23 litre batch seems a bit high assuming you are using a 5 kg grain bill.

I use between 38 to 40 litres for a full brew as I use a 100 litre pot so the evaporation rate is higher

Ah I see, missed the 100 ltr pot.

If you are hitting your gravity targets and maintaining your mash temp then I wouldn't bother stirring.
