the first biab done
the first biab done
well just done my first biab at last
this is what I'm doing
Single Hop Series –
•Grain Bill is 5.44kg malt
28 Litres water at 70 degrees
•Mashing for 60 minutes at 67 degrees
•Boil size of 28 Litres
•Hop additions at 60 mins, 45 mins, 30 mins, 15mins, 10 mins, 0 mins- 53.24 IBU's
yeast is a dry one
pre-boli reading at 20c 1.040
post reading at 20c 1050
the recipe said the og reading should be 1053 so I missed it by three
also they said it was a 23ltr batch size I only got about 18-19ltrs
but I think this was down to me not draining the grain for long
also I did not sparge it
I don't know if I overdone the boil or not
as when it was on a full rolling boil it just look like
someone as emptied a tin of ox tail soup with all the meat bits in it
this is what I'm doing

Well Done Tickle,
Been thinking bout it myself.
Yep thinking sparging gives more than the effort it takes, I've fell short a couple of points myself a fair few times.
But Hey, it's gonna be a good one.
I'd Bottle one or two and hide em in a cupboard for six month
Barnie.

Job Done!
Now the hard part!
2 weeks in FV, 2 weeks warm then 2 weeks cold.
I`ll give you 3 weeks before it is all gone!
So much tasting, just checking, etc. Ooooops, where is all my beer gone?
Hope it`s a good one.
WA
Better get another Brew on!

Re: the first biab done
Well done.
You expect a few hiccups with your first one but for the future you missed your gravity by a lot more than 3 points if you only got 18-19l instaed of 23.
Your batch at 23l would be cloer to 1.040 which is not bad at all and should make a great beer.
If the wait is too much for you then cornys or sankeys are they way to go. You can cut down the grain to glass time to a week if required

Re: the first biab done
Congrats on your first BIAB brew!
Bit's in the wort must either be escaped grain or hops but nothing to worry about - just filter them out before you bottle (if that's what you're doing).
As for missing target by 3 points - again I wouldn't worry about it. I'm currently on brew 15 and I've been both over and under targets on the first few recipes where I've followed to the letter.
I've got to the point where I'm very happy with my own base porter recipe (to which I've so far added sour cherry, vanilla, rhubarb and a spice Xmas mix) although still searching for that IPA/APA 'standard'. Very happy to keep trying though until I get it right!!
