Dry hopping in the keg after force carbing?

Post by Bazz » Mon Apr 17, 2017 11:19 pm

I've just kegged and am force carbing a hoppy IPA for a friends party in 3 weeks time, I'd like to have a really fresh hoppy taste when I serve so was contemplating adding some pellets a few days before serving, would this be a really bad idea?

Is that one of the ones with the mesh in the lid too?

Cheers. Tom

Thanks windrider, I have a couple of those spherical tea infuser things that I was going to use. Better get some pellets ordered. :D

I'm puzzled. How do you stop the beer foaming when you take the keg lid off or do you have to be very quick? :D

Dry hopping the keg is generally fine. It has some advantages such as allowing aroma (which dissipates easily) to be imparted later in the process, and won't then vent it to the outside world. There are also some disadvantages; hops can carry air into the beer, and if left in the keg forever can 'in some circumstances' cause grassy flavours. But done a few days before serving its not likely to suffer from the latter.

Use the PRV (pressure relief valve) to degas the keg, remove the lid put in the hops, regas. Not recommended for long term storage/serving but for the OP's purpose perfect.

I've been talking for years about getting a corny lid with a tab to hang stuff like that inside and to easily pull out (oak spiral in my case)
