Maxi cooler

Post by Alexdc12 » Tue May 29, 2018 9:15 pm

Hi guys! Hope You can help me!
I've bought a maxi 110 cooler for the man cave to dispense lager from a keg. The person said I need to fill it with coolant. I was under the impression I should fill it with water unless it has been converted to run with glycol. How can I tell if it has been converted?
Thanks In Advance!

Hi Mark.
I did read the manual and saw to fill it with water but I wanted to know how I can tell if its been converted to work with glycol as I wouldn't want to put any strain on any of the parts with the extra viscosity if it can't handle it.
Thanks
Alex

The bung for the overflow is missing on mine also. Does the bung just fill the hole? I could prob fit a cork in there or something

filling with water is a good start, its improbable that the chiller has been converted to glycol without you being charged a premium price for the upgrade.

and a quick run with water will reveal the state quick enough, if the ice wall builds up beyond a couple of inches within an hour or two and the compressor kicks off its a bog standard jobby, ( remove the agitator/recirc pump and peek in with a torch)

if the ice wall fails to build its a duffer ;(

or if the ice builds n builds beyond a few inches and encroaches on the product coils without the compressor cutting out after 2-3hours you may well have a glycol upgraded jobby.. the upgrade only involves a resetting of the thermostat that cuts on/off the compressor with a lower target (set point), and in rare cases an upgrade of the recirc pump to handle the more viscous coolant, tho generally afaik this is not usually done and the shorter running life of the pump is an understood cost.. and i have never seen an 'upgraded pump' for sale..

in short plug it in fill her up n suk n see ;)

Thanks a lot! I shall fire it up tonight!
I am going to replace the lines it came with as they stink! I'm not cleaning someone else's mess!
If I loop the recircs that's all I should need to do isn't it? If there's no beer going in there can be nothing to come out.

Does it need a bung to be operational. It looks like mine is missing.

blutak makes a good temp bung, the water mass will increase in volume slightly when the ice wall starts to build so be optimistic and insert a bung to avoid an overspil later.

loop the recirc otherwise expect to get soaked as it pumps the waterbath contents over you..

Thanks. I've fashioned a cork into there. Looks to me b ok to me. Now time to let it do its thing!

I got a beer tap with it and the lines stink like fish. I ordered some new pipe and am assuming I can replace it right to the tap?

Seems to be working OK to me. Any tips to stop condensation dripping from the recircs pipes?

the font should strip down giving you access to change all the tube to the tap, start at the base and dont force anything and you should be fine..

It already has that. Guess I just need to pull it over the coupler.
Thanks

I use water. I tried glycol and it didn't do any harm but I couldn't actually get the chiller to go any lower in temperature so it was kind of pointless. If you're using it for dispense, water is fine (I use mine to cool a fermenter)

All connected up now. Beer is quite frothy at tap. I have a rlbs regulator but it doesn't show much in terms of pressure. Am I right in thinking I will need a secondary regulator to slow things down a bit?

I'm not sure what the gauge is telling me. Beer comes out like a full pint of froth. Once settled beer tastes flat also?
It's a keg of amstel delivwred today from a brewery.

It's cold tho!
