Sundew, but not as we know it!

Post by Monkeybrew » Sat Nov 30, 2013 10:20 pm

This kit adaption is buried in my long thread about brewing individual cans from a 2 can kit, but as I'm so chuffed with it, I wanted to single it out.

Image

Here's the recipe-

Brewlength - 10.5L
1 x 1.5kg can of Woodfordes Sundew
500g of Muntons Light DME
25g of Citra Pellets 14.20% AA Boiled for 10mins
25g of Citra Pellets 14.20% AA Steeped for 30mins
50g of Citra Pellets 14.20% AA Dry Hop
Yeast - S05
OG 1.058
FG 1.012
6.2% ABV

Great body, great aroma and an even better taste!

A simple way to utilise and showcase 100g of a hop. Now I see what the Sundew kit is for.

Cheers

Great stuff MB. I've not used Citra & have seen mixed reviews!! Can you describe the flavour profile when used like this?

I'm going to suggest this to Brew Club members looking for a good kit tweak. =D> But, it begs a question; as good as an AG brew or not?
I am "The Little Red Brooster"

Fermenting:
Conditioning:
Drinking: Southwold Again,

Up Next: John Barleycorn (Barley Wine)
Planning: Winter drinking Beer

Not great at picking out a multitude of flavours, but it hasn't got overly citrus flavours like alot of US hops, nor is it astringent.

I would describe it as having rich tropical fruit flavours.

Is this just their Citra on steroids then?

I think for this style of beer ( I was aiming for an AIPA), that it's quite close.

I can only really judge it against commercial hoppy brews, as I haven't brewed an AG equivalent yet. I find that hardly any malt flavour is present due to the dominant hops in this style, so it suits a high gravity kit adaption well.

I am amazed at how well it turned out!

Cheers

Sure is!

I had it on cask at the Chappel beer festival in September, and it was sublime.

Let it go, let it go!!!!!!

We drink all of our beer like that here in Orange County (Essex). It's actually all Imageshacks fault

The poor spelling must have been down to the Citra fumes

Citra - great hop. Got 175g of the stuff in the freezer that I'm going to go mad with.

Is the Wilko golden ale confirmed by anyone as actually Sundew?

Sounds good, what are you planning?

I've got 100g of Citra Pellets, that I plan to use in an FOC Sundew kit that I've got, along with a moderate amount of Apollo :=P

I've only brewed 1 can of it so far, and even though I steeped a small amount of Munich Malt for the brew, it came out a reasonable amount darker than I remember Sundew being.
