Best before date
Best before date
Hello
I have a Belgium abbey ale kit that for some reason I didn't make after buying it. I have just noticed that the best before date is Oct 14. Would it still be ok to use? I can get new yeast.

Re: Best before date
It will be fine and the yeast is almost certainly OK too. If you want to be uber-cautious then have some extra yeast on hand just in case.

Best by date doesn't mean it's no good after the date.leon103 wrote:Hello

I'm just here for the beer.

Re: Best before date
Nope, just the manufacturer covering their ass (like buying a top of the line SDS drill, reading the instruction book to find the maker only guarantees that it can drill 13mm in wood ! half an inch....beond which it's my lookout )Rookie wrote: Best by date doesn't mean it's no good after the date.
It'll be fine - but as others have said, dried yeast does have a viability limit so although it'll probably be fine, for the price of a fresh pack of yeast I'd rather not drink "meh" beer.... done it too many times before

Re: Best before date
To be fair to the manufacturer, pretty much all packaged "food" items have to have some sort of "best before" date by law. Even stuff that doesn't degrade in years. At that point you're largely limited to choosing a date that you feel you can justify to anyone likely to inspect you even when everyone knows it's all but meaningless.Pinto wrote:Nope, just the manufacturer covering their ass

Last October I added a can of Cooper's Real Ale extract "best before Sep 2009" to an AG brew. I'm still here.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget
Re: Best before date
If you want to check the viability of the yeast before you start, make a yeast starter. It'll probably help in the case of a strong beer anyway.
I suspect I've posted too late, but it's an idea worth keeping in mind if it happens again...

Safbrew Abbaye will do the trick, otherwise there are plenty of liquid choices.leon103 wrote:What is the best type of yeast for a Abbey beer?
