Punk base
Punk base
Afternoon
I'm looking at brewing something similar to the brewdog punk ipa...doesn't have to be exact, just a similar crisp, light coloured ipa. Good strength and ready for a bit of dry hopping.
What would you recommend as a base kit, i find most of the ipa kits are a darker, more bitter style than punk. I thought possibly the Canadian blonde with additions??

Re: Punk base
Canadian Blonde is a good base IMO, as it's paler than the APA kit and has a higher bitterness too.

Re: Punk base
I've done an all grain of this, Safale US-05 worked well.
Re: Punk base
Thanks for that MB, I hadn't even considered the yeast....I've got an order going in for some more supplies so I'll go with Alex's recommendation of the Safale 05.
I was thinking of 1 - 1.5kg of dme (light or ex. light), no hops added until dry hop stage (at which point plenty!!), something along the lines of the Brewdog hop combo.
So, with the Canadian Blonde kit and 1.5kg of dme, brewed to 20l, I might get somewhere near the 5% mark.....???

Re: Punk base
Hi
I'd go with the 1.5kg of Light DME to 20L. It should hopefully give you an OG of 1.050-1.052, and S-05 will chew through that lot, as it attenuates quite high.
S-05 is very clean flavour wise too, so shouldn't mask the hops.
Personally I'd be tempted to chuck in a (steeped) hop tea at the start, aswell as the dry hopping, to help prolong the hoppiness of the brew.
Cheers

Re: Punk base
As MB says, I'd do a hop tea too. You want maximum flavour and aroma from those hops. That's what Punk is all about. Sounds like you got everything else sorted!
Re: Punk base
Hops are on order so i'll hopefully get this started by the end of the week. I'll take your advice and kick it off with a hop tea.
When I've got this up and running i'll post the recipe and update on progress. Thanks fellas.

Re: Punk base
Finally got my lazy ar3e into gear last night and brewed this...went a bit mad with the hops but what the hell, see what happens :
1 x Coopers Canadian Blonde
1.5kg of LME
Hop tea (40g Ahtanum, 30g Simcoe, 30g Amarillo, 20g Chinook, 15g Cascade)
Safale US-05
Brewed to 20L
OG - 1048
Plan is to dry hop on day 7, I'll update when I've done this. Any glaring errors so far?
I'm thinking of a single hop ale next, using the blonde again if this one works and banging in a load of Mosaic.

Re: Punk base
Wow, now that's a serious hop tea!
Were they leaf or pellet hops?
Cheers

Re: Punk base
All leaf MB. I thought the OG might have come out a touch higher. Its currently blowing the lid off the FV so the signs are promising.

Re: Punk base
I bet they sucked up some water!
1.048 is about right as I notice that you went for liquid over dried malt extract.
LME contains a percentage of water, and IIRC it equates to approx 1.2kg of DME.
I'm sure that it will turn out ok, certainly going to a hop forward beer.
Cheers

Re: Punk base
Looking good to me!
Maybe you could have brewed to 21L to take into account the losses when you dry hop. With the all grain version I ended up with 18L, stunning beer though
