Draught Citra IPA (Coopers Toucan)

Post by Monkeybrew » Sat Sep 24, 2016 6:33 pm

After cocking up my stout brew, I'm going for something a little different now.

I haven't brewed a Coopers Toucan for ages, and as I picked up 2 cans of Coopers Draught for 9 quid each at Tosco, they will be the Base of my Citra IPA.

Draught Citra IPA - 24L

2 x 1.7kg Can's of Coopers Original Series Draught
1 x 1kg of BKE
100g of Citra Pellets steeped for 30mins
100g of Citra Pellets Dry Hop
2 x Coopers Ale Yeast Sachets @19C

Estimated OG - 1.054
Estimated Bitterness - 53 IBU's

Going to get up early tomorrow and fill the kitchen with tropical hop smells :D

AG#42 - Heritage Double Ale - 10.5%

A little update on this one.

The actual OG was 1.056 and it looked finished at 1.014 on Tuesday, so I popped the 100g of Citra pellets into the FV for the dry hopping.

Aiming to rack this on Friday or Saturday, then I'll crash cool then keg 20L and bottle what's left.

Cheers

Can you elaborate on this please.
Were they steeped in warm water, cold water, some of your beer? If so, how much steeping liquid?
Was the juice then added to the FV with or without the pellets, ie, strained?
Always looking for new ways to do things! :D

I dissolved the kilo of BKE in 6L of warm water in an 11L stock pot on my hob. Once dissolved, I boiled it for 10 minutes, as I had discovered the bag of BKE had a tiny hole in it, and I didn't want to risk any problems down the line!

I then let the wort cool to approximately 85C, before add the Citra for the 30 minute steep.

After the steep, I use a stainless steel mesh sieve that gets sanitised before use, and I line it with a piece of voile that gets boiled for 10 minutes to sanitise it, then I strain the hopped wort through it. I find it a great way to separate the hop pellet mush.

Cheers

The sieve and voile method is the one I use for BIAB and beer kits. Don't bother with muslin bags at all these days. Allows the beer much better exposure to the hops.

This brew is tasting spot on, even after just one week in the keg it was very drinkable.

No astringent hop flavours, just lovely Citra hop punch goodness. It even has a nice subtle caramel malt background flavour that seems to balance the bitterness quite nicely :)

The only negative, is the total lack of clarity, which is a bit confusing as even after 2 weeks @10C in the keg it is still cloudy looking. Perhaps it's hop haze or the fact that I boiled the BKE for a short while?

Don't know why I'm too bothered though, as some hip craft beers that I tried in London looked like ditch water, so this fits the bill well!

Still no time in life for an AG brew yet  , so I might try and pick up a Can of Coopers Brew 'A' IPA from Wilko, as it's a bargain at £12.

Cheers

Look into using gelatine in the keg to drop out that haze. Works really well in kits and all grain.

Looking good Monkey! =D>
The Hop haze will drop out. Let`s hope it still keeps the Hop aroma.

I`ve still got four of yours to `Taste Test`.
What Brews are 17, 18, 19, BH? =D>
Are they any good? I don`t want to put myself at risk by drinking any old tat from England! :D Oooooooh! That`s Racist. Now I`m Fu$$ked! #-o

I probably am well and truly screwed if the `Racist People` are on JBK! #-o

The 200g of Citra has certainly given plenty of flavour and aroma, so I'm sure that won't be a problem.

17 is an AG Smokey Porter
18 is an AG Chinook & Equinox APA
19 is an AG Nelson Sauvin Wheat Beer
BH is a bit based Black PA

Don't worry matey, these brews are reasonable safe!

Cheers
