Just made a Stout and as I dropped the Hydro in the sample tube I wondered if the readings are affected by Hydro temperature.
Filled sample tube with beer @22deg, rinsed Hydro under running cold tap (very cold).
Will this affect the OG reading?
I could have PM`d some clever people to save myself any ridicule / abuse / trolling, etc (as if I really care), but I feel this is the type of question / answer
that could help any Newbie Brewer.

Re: Hydrometer Temperature?.......
You could try a little experiment, with water at 22c and cold water and hot and cold and hot and keep going till your sure your getting the readings.

Re: Hydrometer Temperature?.......
I sometimes leave the hydrometer in hot water and sterilizer and just give it a careful rinse under the tap to remove the sterilizer before dropping it into the beer. I have wondered if the air inside the hydrometer still being warmer affects the reading but when I have left it a while the reading does not seem to change. Presumably this would be the same as cooling the hydrometer in cold water. I don't know how it is not affected but it appears not to be.
Re: Hydrometer Temperature?.......
Air wants to expand as it is warmed but is constrained in the glass which expands very little in comparison, i.e. mass/volume/density of the hydrometer is pretty much constant. Instead, the pressure in the hydrometer increases with temperature.

The only effect of the hydrometer's temperature that I care about is if it lowers (or raises) the temperature of the liquid. Same with the sample jar. As long as you check the liquid in situ, all in, you're OK.
