Geordie bitter yeast.

Post by flamingo » Sun Dec 10, 2017 8:49 pm

Hi,

Have been advised by some home brewers to use a yeast like Gervin or Safale 04
instead of the yeast attached to the Geordie bitter tin. I think that is a Munton's one.

They say investing in a better quality yeast will improve the taste/brew.

Would appreciate any advice if anyone has any thoughts on this.

Popular wisdom says that Gervin is better than kit yeast. The yeast they sell in Wilko is supposed to be Gervin.
However when I was brewing kits I always used what came with the kit and produced good beer

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply.

For what it's worth I'm giving safale a try. It's not overly expensive so I'll see if it does improve things. I'll report back on the outcome.

There's nothing wrong with Munton's yeast; I use it fairly often with good results.
I'm just here for the beer.

OK Rookie point taken.

I'll report back on each after trying the safale.

Tried bought yeast and an off taste is present in many of the bottles. Beer is also less clear.

There's chlorine in the water here so it may well be that. Others have experienced similar. Will use campden tablet next time.

Can't say that I'm impressed by the kit yeast. I made the GYB up 11 days ago, my first kit brew in years. Dropped from 1042 to 1016 in three days but hasn't budged since. That's just under 3.5%abv. I make stronger brews from a Yorkshire Tea bag!
