Lager

Post by Roy » Tue Feb 13, 2018 1:58 pm

Hi all,

If I were to brew a lager kit, I gather that lagering is a process carried out in the cold. Are there any kits, yeasts or recipes recommended by forum users that I could have a stab at? I'd be looking to chuck it in my garage to keep it cool.

Thanks, Martin

I've used Saflager 34/70 in all grain to excellent effect.

Can you control the primary fermentation temperature at lager strain range, say 10-13C? If so, then I will recommend that yeast. Bring it up warm for a couple of days 'diacetyl rest' late on in fermentation before lagering. A couple of properly rehydrated sachets into 20-odd litres of normalish strength lager fermented cool. If not, then I know people have done decent ale-temp lagers with US-05 and other 'clean' ale strains.

A dry hop with some Saaz would probably give the kit a lift.

Many people recommend Cooper's European Lager which is supplied with genuine lager yeast.
