2015 BM20 skipping steps
Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
I hope you are still using your Betamax then.
Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
When did that come out! I still use the cassette recorder 2 inches away from the wireless
Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
Not sure It came out of the box, I brewed until now with no connection to the interweb etc.
I'm sure I can see which version is on the BM itself somewhere.
Falling apart together nicley🍻
Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
The BM did an overnight fine at the weekend so looks like replacing the battery did the trick.
One new thing was I had a huge wort fountain was leaking from the lid when I took the lid off the fountain was about a foot or so tall and going all over the floor.
Paused the mash and gave it a stir but it looks to me like the grain has been crushed super fine.
I tried a new supplier for my grain and have 25 kilos of the stuff. Would this be the problem?

Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
Good news on the battery replacement and probably quite relevant for others in the coming couple of years.
A too fine grain crush on the BM can cause wort fountains, who was the supplier? You could try adding rice hills but I don’t know if I would then want to mash unattended.

Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
The software version is 1.0.19 from reading on other forums I cannot update to the latest version without first loading up to 1.0.24
So will leave alone for now Speidel don't offer older versions on there website either.
As for unattended mash's, I may add some rice hull's or just do a daytime brew and see what is occurring.
The grain was bought from https://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/

Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
Speidel should send you the software on request if you change your mind.
Hopefully the hulls (or oat husks) work out for you.

Wort fountains.
I believe that this is caused by the upper disc moving. I have a rubber seal* around mine that keeps the mesh and disc together. Mix well when you dough in. Sorted. Had 1 not had another in 10 years.
*cut down silicone hose.

Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
Any silicone hose diameter will do, but the wall thickness must be 2mm.
To make: Let it relax. Sticky tape it to the bench. Then cut halfway through with a razor.
In use: hold the disk and mesh together slip the 'seal' over both. Ensure the wall of the malt tube is wet & slide it gently in. Should fit snug. Won't move.
To remove: Once you have lifted the malt tube out, tap the edge of the disc gently and it will pivot.

Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
Hi Mash
This my fist one for about 6 years, never had any problems with my Inoxia disc's.
Will take more notice of the fit when I brew next.

Other people a used stainless wire to nip the two together.
The seal also makes fire a cleaner wort... Less escapees

Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
Was in a lighter grain bill?
Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
No lighter grain bill I just noticed when I stirred it in ,it was a lot finer than usual.

Re: 2015 BM20 skipping steps
I do think giving it the room to move solves the problem. Else I have been exceptionally lucky
Would be interesting to run the same recipe again with a modified disc.
