I don't filter, as I have never had any need to filter wine, and I don't use finings either. The only wine that has never cleared was a plum wine, due to a pectin haze but, other than that, they're clear as a bell! Some people also say that filtering wine can strip some of the flavour and aroma from it too.

I won't buy expensive filters and as Mark said most of the time you don't need them,
I have tried using the paper coffee filters but they clog up too fast so if I do need to
filter I just pour the wine through some sterilised muslin cloth which seems to do the
trick.

We use a Harris Vinbrite and I have to say there is nil discernible difference in taste before and after but the wine looks smooth and polished.

Same here. The filter pad does seem to collect a little "debris", ie fine oak chip particles, & I haven't noticed any stripping of the flavour.

I use the Harris Filter, but I found that it seams to take an absolute age to filter my wine, So long in fact I dont really use it now unless absolutely necessary.
First time I used it, it seemed to go fine, but now I cant seem to get a good rate of flow through it. Not sure what I've done differently mind.
I seem to be following all the instructions

Like Mark, the only wine I've made that didn't clear was a plum wine. I'd tried Kwik Clear finings which helped, but the I rad it through a Harris Vinbrite I'd acquired through Freecycle. It cleared, but became infected. I suspect because the papers it came with were suspect.

I used a filter for the strawberry wine and got rid of the bits, took ages though
