Hi,
Just a quick question. I have made wine years ago and I remember that I usually racked off into glass demijohns before eventually bottling. However I sold my kit and am now in the slow and expensive process of replenishing it.
I was wondering until I eventually stock up with enough glass demijohns could I use the 5L (emptied) water plastic containers that you can buy from supermarkets that normally contain spring water? You can pick these up for around £1.50 whereas even the 'proper' plastic demijohns from home brew shops are around a fiver.

Plastic containers for wine storage
Re: Plastic containers for wine storage
I have stored wine for up too three months in those bottles without any issues, after I have no idea how long you could store wine this way

Have a look in your local council tip/recycling centre - My local ones will sell anything non-electrical that comes in, they generally sell glass demijohns for £1 although I got 6 for £4 a while back. Dusty and dirty but washed up fine.
And yes the water containers will be fine.

I have some elderberry 'port' which has been in a 5 litre plastic water bottle for at least 3 years, and doesn't appear to have suffered because of it. Should be fine.
Re: Plastic containers for wine storage
As already mentioned above, I've seen wine for sale in supermarkets in plastic bottles that look very similar to those spring water is sold in. I don't see why it would need to be anything special as long as it's food-safe. Obviously some of these plastics are somewhat permeable to gases, but then so are corks.....

You should be fine unless you plan on storing for years. The plastic water bottles will leach oxygen over time, but that means years before you will notice a difference I'm sure.
