gallon demijohns ex cider

Post by brewjohn » Sat Dec 12, 2015 12:46 pm

Just been given some 1 gallon demijohns that were used for cider. As you know they wont take a standard rubber airlock bung because the neck has a smaller inside diameter . As they came without a screw on cap I was just about to dump them when I had a brainwave ! I looked through our kitchen cupboard and looked at all the jars and bottles we had in. After many tries I discovered that the yellow plastic cap from a Colemans English mustard jar is a perfect fit. Just need to drill it and fit a grommet and it should now take an airlock.

That's handy to know. I have one with a screw top as well. I'd not thought of rummaging in the kitchen for suitable lids. Must be careful that the wine doesn't get flavoured with mustard :)

Forgot to say I am living on steak for the next month to get all the mustard used up it would have been cheaper to buy some new jars !!!

Given the upcoming festival of wanton consumption and gluttony you could cook a ham smothered with honey and mustard.

If they are like the American screw top demijohn then a lid from your typical supermarket 1/2/3L milk carton also fit perfectly.

wouldnt a normal cork fit if you drilled a hole in it for the airlock?
