Magnum Kit doesn't seem to have started fermenting

Post by SquireKnott » Thu Apr 07, 2016 10:43 am

I put a Magnum White wine kit on about a week ago.

Stuck the hydrometer in yesterday and gravity waas still about 1.040 which suggests to me it hasn't even started fermenting (?)

Could I kickstart it with some wine yeast? If so, would I add more sugar too?

What was the OG? Most wines start around 1.090 which should finish at around 12%

I didn't check the starting gravity!

So it might be ok then...?

It sounds like it could be. It might be best to leave it for a week or so and check again. In my experience, wine can take between one and three months to finish fermenting, the bulk of this would be in the first couple of weeks, slowing down after that.

Was there any airlock activity or bubbles/froth etc on the wine?

It should finish around 0.994 ish so it's got a way to go yet
