Turbo Cider Problem

Post by davidla80 » Wed Sep 24, 2014 9:57 pm

Well having made my first (reasonably successful) batch of beer a couple of months ago I thought I was the bee's knees :D
Apparently not!
On Sunday I put 5 liters apple juice, 350g honey, a cup of strong tea (for the tannin) and a packet of cider yeast in a large fermenting bucket, gave it a stir, put the lid on loosely and 3 days later ... no foaming. In fact not much seems to happening at all.
The temperature in the room at its coldest has been around 19c when I go to bed but I put a sheepskin rug around it to try and keep it warm through the night.
Any idea what I did wrong? And anything I can do to rescue it? Some sugar?
Thanks for any ideas!

Nutrient!

Also, If the bucket is really large compared to the brew, the surface area is such that observable activity will be minimal.

What juice? Just check it didn't have sorbates or sulphites...

Thanks for the reply. It's a 25l bucket so you might well be right. Will check juice cartons when I get home (juice was Aldi pressed not from concentrate).
Is it too late to add the nutrient?

No, not too late, whack some in.
a 5l brew in a 23l bin with no nutrient won't show too much on top for a while, maybe not ever

Well tonight there's a little layer of scum on top, so I hope things are looking up...
