Scratter - Mark 3 (+pics)

Post by jmc » Mon Sep 29, 2014 5:30 pm

I modified my scratter this year primarily to make it easier to set up and less messy.

I fitted a sanitised 5L PET bottle over the outlet.
Base cut off and a hole cut just bit enough to screw onto the waste disposal outlet.

This doesn't restrict it at all, and has had the effect of speeding it up, reducing temperature of the waste disposal unit.
It also reduced temp of the apple pomace, which was warming up a bit in the longer time it was in the unit.

This restricted thick apple pomace coming out and caused waster disposal unit to heat up

Outlet shortened, but then apples can fly out horizontally (v.messy)

With mod to catch pomace. Still a bit messy and a pain to set up and clean.

As you know I have a similar setup with a waste disposal unit.

My biggest wish is to find a way to feed the unit as it seems silly to have to stand there chucking apples in one by one. Next time I hope to rig up some long piece of guttering as a feeding shute. The other factor is apple size. It is so much easier if you are using apples that are naturally small enough to fit through the unit. Halving or even quartering big apples is a pain.

Dean.
