Has anyone managed to harvest in any way, the yeast from Westons Old Rosie cider recently, I did do it around 3 years ago but having tried around 6 times in the last 2 months in all of the usual ways, no yeast has been harvested which leads me to believe that Westons have stopped using live yeast. Anyone :?:

Sadly, I think pasteurisation is becoming a standard practice these days.

Well its day 6 of the dregs of 3 bottles of Old Rosie in 100ml of AJ, starting gravity was 1047 using my refractometer and just read it again today and its still 1047 so I think that proves it that they no longer leave live yeast in the bottles bit is in fact dead yeast for the cloudy affect.

In the interest of helping others who wished to culture Old Rosie yeast I decided to contact Kate at Westons Brewery to ask if infact if Old Rosie was bottle conditioned and was there any form of live yeast left in the bottles or was it all pasteurised and infact dead yeast to achieve the cloudy aspect. Here is the reply.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for your enquiry into one of our Ciders- Old Rosie . I can confirm that this Cider does not contain live yeast and is a hot filled product.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Kate

Just for added info, I tried to culture the dregs from a 3 litre Old Rosie bottle last year. I had zero activity which led me to believe it's dead. Her reply suggests it's pasteurised.

That is correct, the product is hot bottled.

Good Job, Buster,
Saves a few people wasting time on Weston yeast grabbing (if they read these threads)! :D
