water treatment for cider?

Post by Baldbrewer » Fri May 27, 2016 11:04 am

Hi All,
does anybody treat their water before making a kit cider?
I have a report from Murphy & son for brewing additions but just wondered what people do for their ciders?

Cheers,
Baldbrewer.

I only do one batch of cider a year and it never occurred to me to do anything with the water other than filter.
I'm just here for the beer.

Given the lack of Malt or hops, I think the water for cider is much less relevant that beer. Given that I only make pure juice ciders tho, it's never even entered my mind

The only treatment I do is adjust the pH of the must, which needs to be about 3.5. Shop bought AJ tends to be about pH3.0. Add sufficient yeast nutrient, if not included in the kit.

Would it at least be best to boil it first to drive off chlorine etc..??

I've got a Pear Cider kit to do and they're not cheap to mess up!

thought at least to use the water filter.... so just tested the PH of the water after after running through the Brita and it's dropped from 7.0ph out the tap down to 4.7ph post Brita.

for all you water chemists ...is that too low?

Campden tablet can deal with that just make sure you don't overdo it.

If you leave water over night the chlorine evaporates naturally. It's the chloromines you want to get rid of when brewing beer. Hence, leaving the water for a couple of hours (at least) with a crushed campden tab.
I buy from The Malt Miller
