Quantities of apples for cider

Post by utrinque1951 » Wed Aug 17, 2016 4:14 pm

I've been brewing beer from kits and wines from fruit for many years. This year, I have started gardening on a patch surrounded by apple trees - both eaters and cookers. I have permission to take as many apples as I wish to save them from going to waste. My question is this, given that I have access to a crusher and press I would like to make cider in multiples of 5 gallons. How many apples ( what weight) would I need for every 5 gallons? I use about 10 lbs to make one gallon of apple wine. Would 50 lbs be enough for a first 5 gallons of cider?
Thanks in anticipation.

All apples are different, if you go with a 50% yield of juice you should be OK.

Last autumn I made cider from fruit for the first time, I collected apples in fermenting bins and I reckon I got 5 gallons from roughly 3 bins of apples. So 1 from 3 by volume, I never weighed them though, I did pears too and I got 22 litres from 2 bins full. Pears are much juicier!

I'd agree that's a fair place to start.

This many apples------->120 Litres - depends on the apples and also the scratter/press, I got a new scratter last year and seemed to get more than I did with my garden shredder the previous years.
