Best time to pick Crab apples for cider?

Post by DC » Tue Sep 13, 2016 12:22 pm

Hey all, thinking of doing another batch of Cider this year and was wondering whens the best time to pick the apples?? The last batch I made I picked them at the start of September but the sugar content didn't seem too good judging from my hydrometer reading only managed 1036 OG. Should I wait a bit longer this year before pick the apples?

Crab apples never really have much sugar in do they? That's why they are so sour.

I am also looking to pick some over the next couple of weeks. I want to make this crab apple brandy which I tasted over the weekend and was lovely.
Never enough time...
