How long does Mead last?

Post by pads72 » Sun Jun 01, 2014 1:46 pm

I've got a bottle of mead from Cornwall that's at least 8 years old lurking in my booze cabinet, 14% ABV.
Does Mead improve with age, or will it be past drinking?

Only one way to find out!

Homemade mead definataly improves with ageing though, I made some 3 years back, and it was pretty horrid if im honest, bottled it, stuffed in the corner and forgot about it. This winter I found it again, and it wasn't half bad, had smoothed out a lot, got even better when I heated it and had hot spiced mead,

As far as I'm aware it doesn't oxidise in the same way wine does, so it can be pretty hardy. Give it a taste mate, I don't see why it wouldn't have lasted that long. Mead requires significant aging so should be fine.

Fermenting -
Conditioning - Meads - Raspberry Melomel yeast test, Vanilla Cinnamon Metheglyn, Orange Melomel.
Drinking - Youngs AAA Kit; Leatherwood Traditional Mead, Cyser, Ginger Metheglyn.
Planning - Some kits until I can get back to AG, then a hoppy porter, Jim's ESB, some American Red.
