Jaipur inspired IPA

Post by Scooby » Fri Jun 04, 2010 11:44 am

I've been meaning to try a brew in this style since I first tasted the Thornbridge offering a few years ago.

I know the hops are Chinook, Centennial and Ahtanum and have an idea of the breweries schedule but have used one I favour for hoppy, aromatic brews. Depending on the yeast I use I may drop the OG a little as it may be a little stronger than I like to drink.

OG 1.055 IBU 53.0 Colour 9.4 EBC

(Approx quantities.)

Pale Malt 96.5% 11100g
Munich Malt 3.5% 400g

Most of the bittering will come from a 90min boil:

Chinook 15.2 IBU 29g
Centennial 16.0 IBU 37g
Ahtanum 9.7 IBU 32g

The rest will come from a 20min flavour/aroma addition, I find Chinook a little harsh added late so it's omitted.

Centennial 6.1IBU 25g
Ahtanun 6.0 IBU 35g

I'll then add 200% of the 20min addition at 80c and steep for 30 mins. 50g and 70g

Not sure about the yeast yet, I have 5 or 6 to choose from.

Comments welcome

Scooby's mash tun is a beast!

Recipe looks great, although I have still never tried/seen Jaipur anywhere around here. Invalid Stout says punk IPA is basically the same.

The tun is about 65l and I'll get about 45l in the fermenter, luckily they're fairly high AA% hops but still getting on for 300g total, they soak up a lot of wort in the kettle.

I don't get to drink Jaipur that often, never from the pump round here but can find the occasional bottle. I have bottled Punk now and then and have had it from the cask once. The hopping in both are very similar but only from memory I'd say Jaipur was a grown up punk, not so in yer face and aggressive as the youngster

It does loook great!

I had a trip to the brewery in Feb and bought a 5l mini keg of it, We occasionally get Lord Marples and Jaipur at my local here on the island!
Ok, so if this is a hit I could scale it down using beer engine... ?

I do like Jaipur as its very hoppy but not too intense, it mellows off after each swallow :D

Mmmm I have a bottle I'll put in the fridge when I get home, should be lovely slightly chilled for afer the TT practice tonight :)

+1 on the comparison between Punk and Jaipur, I find the Punk is rather "coarse"!

I have just put an approximation of this into Beer Engine as it is a great temptation...
Downton Chimera IPA is another I want to have a go at, any ideas on this Scooby?
Totally different hopping, Golding, Pioneer & Fuggles.

+2. Punk isn't bad but Jaipur is a lovely pint. A while back they had it on tap at the Flowerpot in Derby, many pints were drunk that night. I also love Thornbridge's St Petersburg IRS, what a nice pint :D

I was going to say Jaipur was more sophisticated but couldn't spell it  (I just looked it up in the dictionary)

Can't help with the Downton beers as the only one I've had is the excellent Elderquad  4% is more my type of beer  If it's up to that standard it should be a cracking beer.

TT practice, chilled Jaipur.......Envious or what

You got it with the mellowing, I find whilst I enjoy one small bottle of punk I'm fighting it after that, the Jaipur is altogether more drinkable.

I'll be brewing this in a week or so and I'll post up the final recipe and let you now how it goes, and yep just put it into beer engine and scale it down.

If you want another take on this look Here you can compare Scarer's award winning Bombay IPA

I will look forward to the results Scooby :D

Had a look at Scarer's Bombay - it looks very interesting and the hops are obviously more available now.
I wonder how this compares with Alcazar's Bombay Castle?....

It is a shame that Scarer is in the Farringdon with two r's!

I had a go at this last week and it's just about ready for bottling. I used Vienna instead of Munich and less bittering hops although I kept the Chinook in for 20 min addition and steep.

I used WLP-001 and first results are pretty impressive although I think it will take a few weeks to tell.

Hi,

I saw scarers recipe and thought it looked good, was it inspired by Jaipur or somehting else?
TT practice, chilled Jaipur.......Envious or what
I know... Luck guy eh..? :D

I have my grandstand tickets for the Senior next Friday also :)
I'll be watching tomorrows race up on the mountain (around the 32nd Milespost) weather permitting of course!

My mouth is watering at the thought of the Jaipur later on... =P~
lol

Cheers!

Yes it was her tweaked version of Jaipur based on info from Thornbridge. It was overall champion at a competition a year or so ago.

I don't have any Vienna but Munich is very similar and I prefer later hopping than the 45min that scarer used, so I came up with my tweaked version. I never aim to make an exact clone as long as it's 'along the lines of' and an enjoyable pint I'll be happy,

Bit far for you Scooby, but for others who might be interested, Jaipur will be at the Charlbury Beer Festival, July 10th.
http://charlburybeerfestival.org/#/the-beer/4526976830

It was an excellent day last year, good food, entertainment and of course, Beer.
Lets hope for the same weather.....

US-05 would be a fair choice, something to let the hops & malt shine.
Hope its as nice as the Original, something to add to the to-brew list :)
