Is this from an established recipe or not??? Just to my eyes the 3 diffrent Crystal Malts and late hops seem over complex.

Hi,

I'm going to be attempting my first extract brew soon and wanted to make something close to the greatest beer of all time (spitfire). Obviously I know I'm not gonna get something as nice but am just looking for something close, that is in my capabilities.

After searching for recipes, it brought me to this recipe, which is obviously all grain. From my limited knowledge, I have drafted a simpler extract recipe as follows:

3kg dried malt extract - light. 264pts / 5 gallons= 1.0528 sg

0.5 oz - target hops 60 mins, 12.8% AA, 23 IBU
1 oz - east Kent gold hops 15 mins, 4.5% AA, 8.1 IBU
1 oz - first gold hops, 10 mins, 8% AA, 14.4 IBU

Total IBU= 45.5

Can anyone tell me whether this should produce something drinkable and spitfire like? And also whether light malt extract is suitable?

Any help or suggestions with this is much appreciated.

kentspitfire, the only thing you may want to consider is steeping some crystal to add in. Either way, I always feel that the principle ingredient that goes with cloning a SN brew is the yeast. It's quite distinctive and I'm not aware of any of the 'standard' commercial yeasts that matches it. However, I believe that Brewlabs hold SN yeast in their bank and will supply it. May be worth an enquiry.

On very good authority (possibly the best authority you could ever have for Spitfire......) the two tricks with Spitfire are a) ferment to encourage fruity esters which makes it taste slightly fuller bodied, and b) it finishes very dry for the strength it comes out at. I'd imagine both are fairly yeast dependent.
