Jim gave the recipe as:
Jim wrote:OK, this is my current thinking:

85% Marris Otter, 10% Pale Crystal, 5% Torrified Wheat. 4.5% ABV.

Bittering = Challenger; Late = Goldings & Cascade. 35 IBU.

Own choice yeast but Nottingham recommended.

I've put the recipe into Beer Engine and this is what I get (for 23l at 80% brewhouse efficiency): -
JBK Summer Quaffer

Fermentable Colour Grams Ratio
Pale Malt 5 EBC 3800 grams 86.4%
Torrefied Wheat 4 EBC 200 grams 4.5%
Crystal Malt, Pale 60 EBC 400 grams 9.1%

Hop Variety Type Alpha Time grams Ratio
Challenger Whole 7.6 % 90 mins 35 grams 46.7% (start of boil)
Cascade Whole 5.7 % 10 mins 20 grams 26.7% (15 mins from the end)
Golding Whole 5.7 % 0 mins 20 grams 26.7% (flame out)

Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.045
Final Gravity: 1.011
Alcohol Content: 4.4% ABV
Total Liquor: 32.7 Litres
Mash Liquor: 13.2 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 80 %
Bitterness: 34 EBU
Colour: 15 EBC
Obviously, you will need to adjust the hops depending on the % AA in your particular batch of hops.

And ---breaking news---- Beer Engine appears to work perfectly in PlayOnLinux. :=P

Obviously for the extract version, you would need to substitute the Pale Malt with LME and leave out the Torrefied Wheat. Maybe someone more versed than me in formulating extract recipes could help here....

For the kit version, again I'm relying on someone familiar with the currently available kits stepping up to help. :)

Hi Jim

As far as I am aware, the crystal doesn't need mashing, so the same amount is put in the recipe to steep. The pale malt is then converted to give the malt extract required. I haven't quite got the hang of the efficiency aspect (as I'm not affected by that), but I'm just matching the OG figures in Brewtarget:

Pale Crystal Malt, 60 EBC, 400 grams
DME 2.9kg or LME 3.6kg (conversion between DME/LME is 80%/100% or 100%/125%)

Hops should be the same for a full size boil, but more will be needed if the boil is more concentrated then diluted afterwards.

I may replace the Cascade and Goldings with Challenger and More Challenger :D
Ready to go: Malt extract, grain, yeast and a freezer full of hops.
Fermenting: Nowt.
Conditioning: Nelson's Revenge.
Drinking: Stop Wining, Firsty Gold, DarkMun, Yankee, Porter, ApAht, Cider, Mead, Tripel, Elderflower beer, Gluten Free, beer, wine, port, gin, beer, wine, port, gin...

For extract (same hopping as AG):

A. 2kg Extra Light DME, 500g Wheat DME, 400g Pale Crystal. (OG 1043 - add 100g sugar maybe) OR ...
B. 1.5kg LME, 500g Light DME, 500g Wheat DME, 400g Pale Crystal, 250g brewing sugar. (OG 1045)

Kits: just a very pale kit, possibly a lager, or golden ale, steep 400g Pale Crystal for 30 mins and boil for 15 mins. If it's a one can kit, add fermentables to reach 1045 ish. Maybe include 500g Wheat DME.
Hops: you could boil Cascade for 15 with the steeped grain liquor, then dry hop with Goldings.

I'll be using Nottingham (well, Gervin from Wilko to be exact) - it should result in a lighter-bodied finished beer.

Incidentally, the date poll is here for those that haven't seen it yet.

I'll give it a run as well, as long as it isn't during the 2nd week of May when I will be down Jim's area on holiday.
