EKG

Post by Mashman » Wed Mar 29, 2017 5:16 pm

I have a Kilo of East Kent Goldings in the fridge, 2016 crop.

Looking for an ESB recipe to really show off these hops.

Any suggestions ?

Lucky man! Assuming you do 5 gals you've loads there!

I'd keep the malt bill simple, say 100% maris otter, maybe some sugar in the boil or fv.

Bitter with another British hop like admiral, target or challenger then do what you want with EKG in the last 15mins and beyond to flameout, even dry hop.

You can't lose ☺
When you reseal it, pop it in the freezer. Hops don't freeze but last better.

For me ESB = Fullers. Just had a pint of the BYO article ESB. Overdid the chloride but otherwise spot on!

Thanks Guys

The Fullers was my first thought. I may try a copy of Gadd's East Kent IPA which I believe is hopped exclusively with EKG, and lots of them, it is a stunning beer.

This is an ESB i have just brewed using EKG and challenger hops. The trial jar sample at the end of fermentation tasted amazing. Just waiting for it to bottle carbonate and then condition.

Do the forum's Jims ESB :) Just sub ekg for the other hops :) It had a nice assertive bitterness when i brewed it

85% Maris Otter,
5% Pale Crystal,
5% Caramalt and
5% Torrefied Wheat
...to make OG 1.050.

Bittering hops Challenger to 50 IBU ,
15 mins from end Progress (40g),
Flame out EKGs (40g).

Own choice of yeast. Optional dry hop with EKGs in cask.

The late hops will affect the bitterness slightly, but not enough to make a huge difference.

Thanks Chefgage and Hanglow.

Similar recipes there, like the Hanglow one. Will use Co2 extract for bittering plus a load of EKG later,

+1 for Jims ESB - it's one of the best I've tasted

Jim's ESB it is. The grains are weighed and the BM filled with treated water. Early start tomorrow. May try for two brews if I start early enough.

You could go all EKG. It's a nice bittering hop too, but due the low AA it isn't usually considered for early hop additions. It works though.
