Bittering Units?

Post by froggi » Thu Jun 29, 2017 7:55 pm

Hi guys
Been a while since active on the site but wanting to brew a recipe for my old man from his old drinking days.... He's 90 in August..... Question is the recipe asks for 30 bittering units of Goldings to be added at the start of the boil.... Ok I get the Goldings obviously but 30 bittering units??? Puzzles me.... Anyone shed light on this for me please...??? Cheers

International Bitterness Units https://www.thebrewenthusiast.com/ibus/
If you use brewing software to concoct your recipe and know the AA% of your hops it will calculate the IBU. The higher the AA and the earlier you add the hops, the more IBUs you will get

Cheers Richard.... so from what you're saying then it's equivalent to 30 IBUs of your selected hop added at the specified time regardless of weight?? Thanks for the response

The weight of hops makes a difference. If you use a variety with a higher AA% then you need less weight for a given IBU than you would if using a hop with a lower AA%

Just out of curiosity froggi, what is it you're brewing for your dad, and where did you get the recipe from?

Sorry, guys..... dropped off the face so to speak.... Dad passed before I could get this finished and have him sample it..... His passing knocked my duck off big time and only just really thinking about getting back on the horse.... As for the last question posed by The Epworth Brewer, it was a clone of cask conditioned Stones bitter, more a pale than a bitter in colour but it ended up being a cracking beer to be honest and Dad would have been chuffed with it I think....

Sorry to hear this froggi; deeply sad and I'm sure many of us can relate to it. I'm glad to hear the brew turned out well though, and all the thoughts that went with it. Good on yer.
